Galeria La Cometa:
Galeria La Cometa is a contemporary art gallery that has been a staple in Medellin's art scene for many years. The gallery is known for showcasing works from some of the most influential contemporary artists in Colombia and Latin America. The space is intimate and well-curated, allowing visitors to fully appreciate each artwork's intricate details. Galeria La Cometa's focus on established artists is refreshing, as it provides visitors with a glimpse into the evolution of contemporary art in Colombia. The gallery also hosts a variety of events, including artist talks and exhibition openings, making it a hub for Medellin's art community.
Galería Julietta Álvarez:
Galería Julietta Álvarez is a vibrant and eclectic space that features some of the most exciting contemporary art in Medellin. From the moment you step through the door, you're transported into a world of color, texture, and creativity. The gallery's curators have an acute eye for emerging talent, and it's evident in the diverse range of works on display. One of the standout pieces in the current exhibition is an oil on canvas by Carlos Bahamón. A large-scale canvas depicting with tremendous detail, the inside of a museum in viscous red displaying multiple modern master paintings within itself. In the far bottom right corner, you find a gathering of all the greatest masters once alive. The result is a visually arresting display that challenges the viewer's perceptions and memories of art. This space is fresh, exciting, and full of surprises, making it an ideal destination for art lovers of all ages and backgrounds.
Galería La Balsa:
Galería La Balsa is a unique and thought-provoking space that showcases some of the most innovative contemporary art in Medellin. The gallery's curators have a keen eye for works that challenge the status quo and push boundaries in unexpected ways. At the time of my visit there was a group exhibition bringing together works by sculptors of different generations, where through a selection of historical and current works, it aims to show a network of diverse ways of understanding and transforming matter and space. The curatorial text states, “Although there is an interest in showing different moments of local sculptural production, there is no retrospective or chronological claim in relation to the development of this medium. On the contrary, an exchange of views is proposed in which each work in relation to the other is energized and empowered”. The works speak to the power of art, transcending language, and culture, speaking directly to the soul. Galería La Balsa is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience contemporary art that is both intellectually stimulating and visually stunning. The space is intimate and inviting, making it an ideal destination for art lovers who want to engage with works on a deeper level.
Galería Duque Arango Contemporáneo:
Galería Duque Arango Contemporáneo is a sleek and sophisticated space that showcases some of the most established contemporary art in Medellin. The gallery challenges traditional notions of art and beauty and pushes the boundaries of what is possible. Not only representing Colombian artists but a broad range of Latin American artists, this gallery is always bringing in something new to display. With multiple locations, the gallery’s success is proof of the power of art to evoke emotion and transform our perception of reality. If you're interested in some modern masters, visit their mother gallery just a few blocks away where you will find a magnificent space curated exquisitely for the modern master on display, you won’t be disappointed.
Galería Baryshev:
Galería Baryshev is run by Ukrainian artist Igor Baryshev, who himself fled from Ukraine to Colombia in the wake of the ongoing conflict in his home country.
The exhibitions at Galería Baryshev are a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian people, particularly those who have been displaced by the ongoing conflict. The artworks on display reflect the artists' personal experiences, as well as their hopes and dreams for a better future. The themes explored in the exhibitions are diverse and range from personal to political, but all share a common thread of resilience and hope.
Galería Baryshev's contemporary art reflects the personal experiences and struggles of displaced communities. The exhibitions at the gallery are proof of the resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian people, and the gallery beautifully demonstrates such. Igor was a pleasure to speak with!
Pro tip: There are designer bags also showcased (and yes for purchase) and ask Igor to show you his home “art” installation, a dream bathroom!!
Galería Policroma:
Galería Policroma is a dynamic and exciting space that celebrates the diversity of contemporary art in Medellin. The gallery showcases the rich cultural heritage of Colombia while also embracing global trends and influences. At the time of my visit “Estudios para un horizonte inestable” which translates to “Studies for an unstable horizon” was on display, a solo show by the artist Pedron Montilla. "An artist who lives and paints outside the city. His work arises from the understanding of painting as a mystical being in which science and magic coincide. The painting exists beyond the workshop, beyond the canvas, beyond what is palpable and recognizable. The artist feels that the painting constantly explores the limits between sleep and wakefulness, between closeness and distance, and between himself and his mountainous environment." You can see this applied and expressed in this solo show. The works are a celebration of the beauty and complexity of the natural world, and a testament to the power of art to connect us to our shared humanity. Overall, Galería Policroma is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience contemporary art that is both visually stunning and culturally rich. The space is vibrant and welcoming, making it an ideal destination for art lovers who want to immerse themselves in the local art scene.
Pro tip: there are some amazing restaurants in the same building complex, have a look on the map, reservations suggested!
