Oh January, full of chilled winds and pale blue skies, NYC’s art scene is back from winter break with some magnificent shows you won’t want to miss.
Down in SoHo there was an unforgettable Thursday evening of opening nights, it was such a rainy day I figured it would be a lonely night but to my surprise it was overflowing with a very lively crowd. After hitting 7 galleries all nearby I have to say Nicodim Gallery hit it out of the park with the first show of the year. A group show named Disembodied, featuring 12 artists. An absolute exhibition with the highlight of Jeanine Brito. She has such feminine figures in theatrical settings depicting herself surrounded by surreal still life. These self-portraits come to life, almost as if she was a nymph in her poetic habitat sitting in water.

Another exhibit completely opposite of what one would expect in a white walled gallery, though in this digital era short clip films have become very popular among these exhibits, displaying digital media in conversation with canvas. I’d say it’s odd and has yet to grow onto me. Perhaps I want to create my own story not listen to theirs. Chart did just that, with a distinct solo show; “Carrie Schneider: I don’t know her” welcoming you with a film and when you make your way downstairs, you’re surprised by two unique chromogenic photographs made in-camera that span 400 feet. She expresses her continuing investigation of the medium’s roots and main motif of image conveyance and reproduction.

Now on the west side in Chelsea it’s always a party! My wonderful friend (oneyearinparis on Instagram) invited me to a thoughtful Artist Panel/Q&A held at Gallery 1 in High Line Nine Galleries, a dynamic location with a collection of nine skylight exhibition spaces. Gallery 1 exhibited “Reverberation” a duo exhibition by Chellis Baird and Jim D’Amato. A true dynamic dialogue, not only from the artist/curator panel but the curation itself (by Josh Campbell). The juxtaposition of ethereal lightness and passionate reds of Chellis creates a profound conversation with Jim’s complex and confusing organic compositions.

Now making our way uptown, more specifically The Upper East Side, my favorite area! We find a magnificent exhibition dedicated to the inventive Lucio Fontana located at Hauser and Wirth. A quintessential curation recollecting sculptures, works on paper and canvas created over the course of five decades, sequenced as his life and art creations evolved. Not your usual Fontana’s with vivid colors and unexpected slashes, but a compelling exhibit.
