Oh Miami, you’re so beautiful. With your sunny skies accompanied by scattered clouds and palm trees that sway lightly with the wind. A lot of people seem to hate Miami, but I don’t understand why. Tropical vibes and it's only three hours away from New York? What is there to be mad about!
At the end of November and the first week of December Miami Beach gets to see fresh new faces from all over the world, traveling miles to join and immerse themselves in this beloved High Society of the art world. Coming back stronger and bigger than ever for its 20th edition, Art Basel Miami Beach (ABMB) never fails to entertain bringing together 282 premier galleries from 38 countries and territories, including 25 galleries participating in the fair for the first time. These outstanding galleries presented a diverse selection bringing forward a good mix of early- to mid-career artists and blue-chip names. You know what I didn’t notice? NFT’s but that’s no surprise. These past years have been revolutionary, the world seemed to be virtualizing itself to another extent. Situations we thought were to be put on hold were completely digitalized, including the exclusive world of art. It seemed for a couple of months that it would all become this way permanently. But once restrictions started to fade people began to realize the true value of the tangible. I encounter some repetitive pieces since I had been to Europe for Frieze London and Paris + in October so I made it a priority to engage with those artworks that were new or different to my eyes. Here are my favorite artworks from this year’s ABMB.
Gina Beavers
Perhaps this piece wasn’t too new to my eyes … (https://gnr-arts.com/gina-beavers)
Lucio Fontana
I'd never seen a Fontana in this vibrant shade of lime-yellow!
Helen Frankenthaler
A color-field queen, the different hues of earthy tones have a romantic conversation with one another.
Ugo Rondinone
Mini Rondinone’s? Don’t mind if I do. I loved how the primary colors complement each other within the exquisite curation
Tracy Emin
I’m a sucker for neon lights.
Sophie von Hellermann
A beautiful pregnancy glow a women carries when she is blessed with creating life with an unbothered expression because deep down she knows this is what makes her happy, my understanding of the imagery depicted.
